Happy New Year!
Sunny and in the 40′s, 8-10 eagles flying around the Wabasha Deck. Read’s Landing, 20 eagles sighted.

January 4th

41 degrees at  9 a.m. in Read’s Landing and Camp Lacupolis There are loads of eagles here, I counted 90 from the Lake Pepin geological marker looking out just north of Wabasha. The ice is not close to the Minnesota side off Hwy 61 so most were sitting along the ice 1/2 mile away and had to be viewed with binoculars.

By 10:30 they started flying and soaring and there was a nice group of eagles, 7-8 settling over the Wabasha Observation Deck at 11:15. WCCO TV Twin Cities will be broadcasting footage of this the 10 p.m. news Sunday

Jan. 7th.

If it gets colder this weekend , you’ll see more eagles.

I made it to Wabasha on Saturday and Sunday. Got some pictures up by Reeds Landing, there were 7 eagles on an ice flow. Then we saw one flying by while we were eating at Slippery’s. On Sunday we went to Alma and saw three in a tree by the Lock and dam. Then we drove to the Center for some pictures of Angel, Harriet and Columbia. Then we went for a ride up to Red Wing. We saw a sign for an Eagle Watch at Collville Park, so we went into the park and immediately saw six in a tree, two in another tree and probably thirty or more flying by and trying to pick up fish while out in the river area. Here (is a picture) that I took.

Winter Golden Eagle Count 2007 for SW Wisconsin and SE Minnesota

The National Eagle Center’s involvement in bald eagles surveys have been done as a part of EagleWatch since 1989. A Golden Eagle survey coordinated by National Eagle Center Program Specialist Scott Mehus is now in its 3rd year. Scott’s 2007 count is currently up to 41 golden eagles for the day and 51 for the week, with some routes totals still yet to be received. This is up from last years 23 for the count day and 29 for the week. Scott also reported 328 mostly adult bald eagles, 170 red-tailed hawks, 31 rough-legged hawks, and 20 kestrels along the routes well.
